One of the most beloved vehicles of all time, the VW camper van reached what many enthusiasts consider to be the peak of its evolution in 1977. Now featuring the 2.0L fuel injected flat-four from the Porsche 914, the vans were now better equipped to handle highway journeys with a bit more grace. Low end torque was the main source of assistance, although the replacement of the cumbersome swing-axle – in favor of more modern CV shafts – was a contributing factor. With the 3-speed automatic transmission, the capable camper offers a relatively pleasant driving experience.
Of course, road performance is never what these vehicles were destined for. The Campmobile was designed for more utility than anything else. Combining sleeping room for four (comfortably), a stove, sink, refrigerator, campsite hookups for water and AC power and cabinets-a-plenty, this mini RV offers a unique road-tripping experience in true hippie-chic plaid laden luxury.
Fresh from a well tended collection, the one original owner purchased this van new from the factory in Westphalia, Germany. Sitting on new tires, the van has rarely been used since a fresh, high-end paint job only 8 years ago in the original color of Sage Green. From the smooth paint to the extremely well cared for interior, this van shows only the slightest hints of its 65,741 miles in service. A turn of the key brings her to life, smooth and quiet. A real running and driving icon of the 1970’s!
